Shazia Sikander is an American-Palestinean artist who is mostly known for her miniature paintings that heavily reference her personal culture and religious identity. From her religious background as a Muslim woman, Sikander has taken these expectations and ideas of "oppression" and subverted them in order to look at the complexities of womanhood within her society and identity. Taking inspiration from the Qu'ran, family traditions, visual memory and womanhood, her art is heavily labor intsentive, and multi-layered, physically and emotionally. The meticulous nature of her artistic process is almost ritualistic as she focuses on every single detail and aspect of her paintings.
