At Lincoln I was in charge of leading three third grade classes, and created this Rube Goldberg inspired invention assignment. I had to go through a learning curve when dealing with my third grade students because they were old enough to know how they should behave in class but also they are getting more independent, and so I had to make sure that my classroom management was under control, because of how enthusiastic they all were in art class.
Overall Lesson Objective: Given watercolors, examples of problems, sharpies, paper, reflection sheets and a presentation on Goldberg Machines, students will thoughtfully design a detailed Goldberg machine to solve a problem in their personal lives, world or community using different machines and objects. After seeing OK Go's music video, and a discussion about different problems and issues, students had to design a Rube Goldberg like machine to help solve a problem in their lives, world or community. Reading about students artwork was one of the most rewarding aspects of this project, thinking about what problems they wanted to solve and why, from responses like 'I don't want to be late for school' to 'My grandma has a bad hip so its hard for her to get out of bed'. |
