Faith Ringgold is an African-American female artist who is known for her quilting work that deals with themes of race, feminism, social class and identity. As a female artist, she wanted to elevate the art of quilting which was commonly seen as 'women's work' or a 'craft' into fine art by having her work placed in the context of museums. Often her pieces have a narrative that relates to her personal life and upbringing, with full con captions as you follow her characters on the fabric. Through her work and journey, her self-determination and drive to overcome adversity and stereotypes shine through.
