This was my second eight-week placement during my semester of student teaching. I had the opportunity to work with Kristen Childrey who is the main art teacher for the entire elementary school at Lincoln. She is in charge of 20 individual classrooms ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade.
After my high school placement, I was excited and anxious about going to elementary where students are only beginning to learn about art, and knowing that students were mainly in person was going to be a huge switch compared to 80-90 percent of students remaining at home during my high school placement. At Lincoln, we had multiple schedule changes, as we went from 30 or 20 minute class periods to full 1 hour periods and a 'normal' school year schedule. We went from having students working on the floor to having tables, and at Lincoln I learned so much about classroom and behavior management, as well as working with students who had ADHD/ADD or on the spectrum and accommodating to their needs and behaviors. I loved working with the young students due to their levels of engagement of being within the art classroom and just seeing so many enthusiastic faces and listening to their broad sense of play and imagination. |
