Overall Lesson Objective: Given a presentation on Pop Art, examples of role models, Ben Day dots, markers, pencils, rulers, and demonstrations on color and value, students will neatly create their own five panel (minimum) comic strip sending a positive message using value and color throughout.
For this project, I wanted students to think about their different role models and what it means to be a hero. We talked about different examples from super heros to everyday workers. It was touching to hear students talk about their parents or family members who they praised for either helping them and loving them or for their jobs if they worked as nurses, doctors or served the country. We learned about Roy Lichtenstein's use of Benday dots to turn popular culture into art and Keith Haring's use of simple but striking imagery to promote messages about different social issues. We incorporated benday dots and stippling within our comics in order to learn about value and dimension. |
Overall Lesson Objective: Given coloring materials of choice, paper, and a presentation on clickbait, visual culture and the work of Nam June Paik, students will successfully use contrast and exaggeration to create a clickbait worthy thumbnail for a video concept, gif, and fully complete a reflection worksheet discussing their idea.
Because the fifth grade was where my oldest students were and because I only had 2 weeks to complete this project, I wanted to make sure that I designed a project that could be doable within the time frame and something that they could be heavily engaged with right off the bat. From my observations and interactions with the students before I took over, I knew that a majority of students watched Youtube or Tiktok and absorbing so much digital content online. This project came to fruition to see what visual culture students have come to know in their lives and think about how the internet has affected their lives growing up and their personal interests. Students also were able to create Glitch gifs of their thumbnails, inspired by Nam June Paik's Magnet Tvs and glitch art. |
