Raymond Pettibon is an American artists whose work is one of immediacy and high contrast. His primarily black and white imagery is high contrast, mainly creating humorous images of satire that critique American culture and society. With American cultural motifs and objects such as trains, Gumby, baseball and other symbols, he combines text and images to examine these visual cultures and find the corruption within. His cartoon like imagery has commented on sexuality, anger and depression, as his own chaotic process and workflow influence the end result.

Lesson PlanA lesson plan inspired by Raymond Pettibon would be having students create satirical artworks using black and white drawing materials such as india ink, markers or charcoal in order to evoke that same high contrast style as Pettibon's. These satirical artworks can be based on American culture or relate to student's personal experiences and moments in their lives that they wish could have done differently, prodding them to push the envelope.
